Musical Director

The choir is directed by Jamie Conway.

Jamie Conway is Musical Director of the Rutland Choral Society. He is also Director of Music at RGS Worcester, where he conducts the 250-strong RGS Worcester Family of Schools Chorus in performances at Worcester Cathedral, as well as several other ensembles.

Jamie’s choral pedigree is rooted in the UK’s leading traditions. Originally from Gloucester, he began his choral singing with Gloucester and Truro Cathedral Choirs under Andrew Nethsingha, Adrian Partington, and Christopher Gray. He went on to study at the University of Cambridge and sang as a Choral Scholar with the Choir of St John’s College, again under Nethsingha. He has toured worldwide, sung on numerous domestic and international broadcasts and album releases, in venues from the Royal Albert Hall to the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam, and continues to deputise for professional choirs in London and around the country.

Jamie Conway - Choir Director

A versatile conductor and educator, Jamie regularly delivers singing and performing workshops to adult and student performers, as well as directs the RGS Orchestra and various school choirs. He previously served as Teacher of Music and Lay Clerk at Rugby School, singing during the founding years of the Rugby Choristers at Bilton Grange with Richard Tanner. He has conducted a diverse range of repertoire, from Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, Handel’s Dixit Dominus and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade to various stage works including Giulio Cesare, Il signor Bruschino, and Into the Woods. He has also performed operatic roles including Aeneas (Dido and Aeneas), Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), and Le Dancaïre (Carmen).

Jamie attended Uppingham School where he studied piano with Alexis Ffrench, organ with Peter Clements, and singing with Catherine Griffiths. Whilst a student, along with Susie Hill of the Rutland Youth Choir, he co-founded the ‘9.5 Singers’, an a cappella ensemble boasting several million views on TikTok. In his spare time, he is a glider pilot and enjoys running. Jamie is delighted to be working in Rutland and enjoys developing strong links with the local community.
